The Turkish side would take the lead in the 12th minute. Thirty-five-year-old Demba Ba made the most of United’s highline; the striker won the ball in his half and then beat goalkeeper Dean Henderson one-v-one.
Henderson was given the start ahead of David de Gea ahead of the match. The 23-year-old was without a chance as Ba’s finish was too clinical. The same was the case when Basaksehir doubled the lead in the 40th minute. Once again, United’s defense was in disarray as three defenders descended on the ball carrier Deniz Türüc leaving Edin Visca completely unmarked to score from just inside the box.

Two goals down, Manchester United, had the work cut out for them. The Red Devils would, however, pull one back in the 43rd minute, Anthony Martial scored with a short-ranged header. The goal, however, did not lead to a comeback as United never managed to truly threaten Basaksehir, who walked away with their first win in Champions League history.
Zenit and Lazio split points – Caicedo with the late goal
In Russia, Zenit St. Petersburg hosted the Italian side Lazio. The Russians would take the lead in the 32nd minute. Aleksandr Erokhin scored the opener with a short-distance volley. It took Lazio some time to get into the game, but the Italians would find an equalizer in the 82nd minute. Felipe Caicedo scored with a finish from inside the box, which ultimately meant that the two teams would split the points.
