Manchester Cityhave confirmed the signing ofLeeds United midfielderKalvin Phillipson a six-year deal worth a reported transfer fee of £42 million, which could rise to £45m (€52m) if bonuses are met. While the deal doesn’t quite reach the dizzying heights of Man City’s biggest deals, it does represent Leeds’ largest ever transfer fee for a player, beating the previous record held byRio Ferdinand, when he departed forManchester United in 2002 for €46m.

Phillips is considered Pep Guardiola’s key target to strengthen the midfield. The 26-year-old defensive midfielder now becomes the club’s second major signing this summer after Man City have already secured forward Erling Haalandfrom Borussia Dortmund. Now that the Phillips deal is completed, City’s transfer spending now stands at €111.5 million -the most of any club in the summer transfer window.
