Schalke with one of the longest winless runs since 2000 – Derby’s record streak in sightschalke 04
“We must now switch to relegation mode. It’s of no use scoring one or two goals if you get three or four every game. You can’t survive like that,” Schalke’s Sascha Riether, coordinator first team football, warned on Sky. His fears are justified. No club in Europe’s top 5 leagues with a similar winless run has managed to stay up in this millennium. The 4-1 defeat at Borussia Mönchengladbach was the 25th game in a row without three points for the Royal Blues.

In the ranking of the longest winless runs in the five top leagues of the 21st century, S04 occupy 4th spot. Only Derby (32 games without a win), Ancona (28) and Perugia (26), all of whom had been relegated afterwards, are still ahead of Schalke. For Derby, it happened after the 2007/08, four years earlier the two Italian clubs had been hit.
The longest winless runs: Only one club managed to stay up
In addition to Schalke and fellow German sideKaiserslautern, Hellas Verona (24), Arles-Avignon (23), Cagliari (22) and Delfino Pescara (22) make the top 10 – three more Italian and one French club. Interesting: Only Cagliari managed to stay up in the end. Osasuna, like Kaiserslautern with 21 winless matches in a row, did not manage to stay in LaLiga as well in 2016/17.
